CANADIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER INAUGURATES ENERGY PROJECT IN KOLKATA  

The Canadian High Commissioner, Mr. Peter Sutherland, will visit Kolkata April 5-8, 2002. Mr. Sutherland will inaugurate a power project at Sagar Island on Saturday at 15h30. Chief Minister Mr. Buddhadev Bhattacharya will cut the ribbon and Mr. Mrinal Banerjee, Minister of Power, will be present on the occasion.

India-Canada Environment Facility (ICEF), West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) and the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) have jointly funded the energy project, which utilizes wind turbines manufactured by Atlantic Orient Canada, and a wind-diesel integrated controller system provided by the Canadian agency Atlantic Wind Test Site. The Rs 7.013 crore Sagar Island Wind-Diesel project will supply energy in a decentralized manner to meet the local population needs.

Speaking about his visit to Sagar Island, Mr. Sutherland said, "I am pleased the local communities have been involved right from the planning stage of the project and they are eagerly looking forward to extended hours of reliable power supply in their villages."

On April 8, the High Commissioner will address members of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on Canada-India business relations at the Bengal Club at 13h15, followed by a lunch hosted by Mr. Harsh Neotia, President, (CII, Eastern Region).

At noon on the same day, Mr. Sutherland will meet with Chief Minister Mr. Buddhadev Bhattacharya, and at 15h30 with Director, IIT, Kharagpur, Professor Amitava Ghosh.

Mrs. Jo-Lynne Sutherland is accompanying the High Commissioner throughout the program. Additionally, Mrs. Sutherland will visit two Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) projects on April 8. For the visit to the "Community Based Project to Mitigate Arsenic Pollution in West Bengal," she will be accompanied by Mr. Bernard Boudreau, Director, ICEF. They will launch a video on the technology used in removing arsenic from ground water. A visit to the project on the "Human Rights of the Mentally Disabled in Jails and Vagrant Homes in West Bengal" completes the program. Mrs Sutherland will meet with the staff and patients at the SEVAC Mental Hospital and Rehab. Centre.
