AOCI Wind Turbine to Power New Police Detachment

Atlantic Orient Canada Inc. in partnership with Black and McDonald is installing an AOC 15/50 wind turbine at a new RCMP detachment in Amherst, Nova Scotia.  Building construction is currently underway, with turbine installation scheduled for March, 05.  With above average wind speeds at the site, the new wind turbine is expected to provide more than half of the buildings electrical requirements.

This project will be a showcase in Atlantic Canada.  It will not only demonstrate the technical and financial feasibility of industrial sized wind power projects, it will also help promote the use of net metering and utility interconnection standards across the country.  Adjacent to the four lane highway across the Isthmus of Chignecto, which joins Nova Scotia to the Canadian mainland, it will be easily seen by over 1 million visitors to Nova Scotia every year.  In keeping with the high profile nature of the project, Atlantic Orient Canada Inc. has made several technical advancements to the turbine.  A new monopole tower will replace the standard lattice type structure and the turbine will be equipped with a web-enabled remote status and monitoring system.  A kiosk will be installed at the nearby Nova Scotia Tourist Information center which will allow visitors to access the operating history and current operating parameters of the wind turbine.  “A significant amount of engineering has gone into the new additions to the turbine” says Paul Pynn, manager of Atlantic Orient Canada Inc, “ We wanted to make sure that the turbine is not only more aesthetically pleasing, but will also continue to be structurally and mechanically robust.
