Atlantic Orient Canada Inc. commissions second AOC 15/50 turbine on island of Luing, Scotland.

The second 50kW turbine on the island of Luing on the west coast of Scotland is now in operation.  Both turbines are located on the farm of Shane Cadzow, a local cattle farmer.  Electricity from the turbines is being fed directly into the local grid.

Atlantic Orient Canada Inc. commissioned the first turbine in September 2002.  Since then, it has produced over 190,000 kWh’s.  With the recent addition of a second turbine, the small wind farm is expected to produce over 340,000 kWh’s annually.  Previous wind measurements at the site confirm an average annual wind speed of 7.0 m/s at 10m height with large seasonal variation, and particularly high winds during the winter months.  The site is highly exposed to the sea with a maximum 3s gust recorded as 44.7m/s (100mph).

The site is not accessible by crane so the turbines were “tilted up” using a small winch and gin-pole assembly.  The entire installation process was done without the use of heavy equipment.

The turbines use new, advanced technology glass-fibre blades which have replaced the previous wood/epoxy blades.  A series of strain gauges and a data logger were fitted on the first turbine and a large amount of data was collected to confirm strength and performance characteristics.  Analysis of the “real life” data confirms the extensive lab testing which predicted the new blades would be both lighter and stronger.
